History of the Dinafem Seed Bank
The story of Dinafem, like that of most cannabis seed banks, began with a hobby that became a passion: growing cannabis, selecting the best strains, creating new hybrids, and ultimately sharing these discoveries with the cannabis community.
In its first year, in 2002, Dinafem focused on creating solid foundations that would allow them to develop their business, with two main orientations: the technical side, requiring a high degree of research, and the operational side. They built cultivation spaces, conducted specific botanical studies, and began working with selected mothers.
After a year, these efforts bore fruit with their first feminised strain: Power Kush, which marked the beginning of their commercial journey a year later when Dinafem Seeds became a consolidated company. It became the first Spanish company to professionally focus on feminised cannabis seeds with results as good as, or better than, those offered by Dutch banks.

This operation was coordinated by the authorities of the Basque Country, Navarre, customs agents and the Guardia Civil, affecting both the facilities and the people in charge of the company.
The main focus of this operation was to combat illicit drug trafficking and money laundering. The authorities alleged that some activities related to the production and distribution of cannabis seeds could be linked to wider operations of large-scale cultivation and marketing of marijuana, in violation of Spanish drug trafficking laws.
During the raid, cultivation equipment, cash and large quantities of cannabis seeds were seized. Although the sale of cannabis seeds is still legal in Spain, the accusations were related to the alleged use of these seeds to cultivate plants for commercial purposes outside the permitted legal framework.
The operation was a checkmate for Dinafem, which has since been paralysed and its managers are awaiting trial. As a result of this intervention, many of Dinafem’s most emblematic varieties ceased to be available on the market for some time. However, some of these varieties have survived thanks to agreements with other seed banks. For example, Barney’s Farm, a Dutch seed bank, managed to preserve and reintroduce some of Dinafem’s most famous genetics, allowing aficionados around the world to continue to enjoy these legendary strains.
While Dinafem’s future as a company is up in the air, its impact on the cannabis industry remains undeniable. Their innovation in seed saving and the production of stable genetics has left an indelible mark on the industry.
Dinafem Seed Bank Philosophy
The Dinafem seed bank stands out for various qualities, as mentioned above. But if there is one fundamental aspect where they are global leaders and innovators, it is undoubtedly in seed preservation.
Until recently (and even today, in some cases), cannabis seeds were packaged either in paper or aluminium envelopes, or in transparent plastic containers. The main problem is that none of these methods fully protects the seeds or allows them to maintain optimal conditions until they reach the final grower.
The key difference with Dinafem is that, in addition to a meticulous manual selection process, where plant debris is removed, and the size, maturity, and other characteristics of each seed are checked, Dinafem seeds are packaged in a very particular way that ensures they are not damaged by external factors such as light, humidity, or shocks.
Unlike most seed banks, Dinafem focuses on micro-preservation. What does this mean? Instead of having large storage areas for hundreds of seeds, their approach is to protect each seed individually, ensuring that external condition changes do not affect their product.
To achieve this, as soon as they are selected, the seeds are placed in Eppendorf tubes. These are laboratory-grade containers with a completely airtight seal, designed to store liquid samples.
The second key is the use of silica gel, which is also placed inside the tube to ensure that the internal air does not exceed 30% humidity. These small beads – separated from the seed by a piece of polyurethane foam – absorb moisture, ensuring the stability of the air in the tube even if there is an accident.
Moreover, they serve as a reference for the consumer since they change colour depending on the humidity they have absorbed. If they remain orange, it means they have stayed dry the entire time, but as they turn bluish, it indicates that, whether due to humidity at the time of packaging or moisture from the seeds themselves, the gel has done its job by absorbing excess water and protecting the seed.
Afterwards, the tubes are stored in a refrigerator with an extractor – like those used in pharmacies – that keeps the air dry and ensures the seeds remain healthy for several years. For shipping, each Eppendorf tube is placed inside a metal box, which blocks light and protects the seeds from impacts or crushing.
Thanks to all these measures, Dinafem is a pioneer in seed preservation.
