Moby Dick marijuana Strain | Dinafem Seeds
Dinafem has a wide range of strains, but without a doubt, Moby Dick cannabis is one of the few that has become a symbol of the brand and the Cannabis world in general. If you are a true cannabis enthusiast, you have surely heard of the majestic Moby Dick. This green beast is widely known for its incredible yield, powerful effects, and intense aroma. However, Dinafem no longer exists, and with its disappearance, many of its strains are no longer available for sale.
History and Origins of Moby Dick
Moby Dick was developed by the Dinafem breeding team by crossing the potent Haze with a legendary White Widow. This fusion not only brought high yields but also robust resilience. The White Widow genetics provide the sturdy structure and resin production, while Haze contributes its stimulating effect and tall stature. This elite genetic combination makes Moby Dick a favourite for enthusiasts seeking both power and quality.
What happened to Dinafem?
The Dinafem seed bank, based in Spain’s Basque Country, was targeted by a police operation named “Inxer Toro” in September 2020. Since then, the company has been paralysed, with its leaders awaiting trial.
Since the seed bank’s closure, many strains have been lost. However, some, like Moby Dick, have managed to survive.
What happened to Dinafem’s Moby Dick?
Moby Dick is one of the strains that has remained on the market. Thanks to Barney’s Farm, this impressive genetic has been revived and is once again available for purchase.
In short, this Dutch bank was able to contact the breeder responsible for this strain at Dinafem and reached an agreement to include it in their seed catalogue. There are also other seed banks that offer this famous strain.
Characteristics of Moby Dick Cannabis
Moby Dick is a sativa-dominant strain (80% sativa – 20% indica). As they used to say at Dinafem, it is their most well-known, most potent, and most sativa strain.
In addition to being recognised for its effects, it is also a favourite among growers for its high productivity. It grows enormously, reaching up to 4.5 metres outdoors, making it far from discreet. Because of this, Moby Dick is a plant that requires a lot of nutrients—like the beast it is, it needs plenty of food to grow. Don’t skimp, or it will get angry!
Effects of Moby Dick Cannabis
Due to its genetics, Moby Dick affects both the mind and body, though the effect is primarily cerebral. With THC levels over 20%, Moby Dick is an extremely potent and psychoactive strain. One of the keys to its strength seems to be another cannabinoid, THCV, derived from Ecuadorian sativa strains. THCV is activated by ultraviolet light, enhancing the effect of THC.
The effect is not only intense but also long-lasting, with a strong initial high that gradually fades. It’s not recommended for beginners.
Moby Dick also stimulates the appetite, making it especially suitable for treating anorexia or easing symptoms for chemotherapy patients. Along with some food, it’s also recommended to have liquids nearby, as it dries out the mouth quite a bit.
Flavour and Aroma of Moby Dick from Dinafem
The most discerning enthusiasts will surely appreciate its intense aroma. The delicious and refined scent of Moby Dick mainly smells of citrus, woods, and incense.
Many professional tasters describe its aroma as White Widow cubed, as it seems to amplify and take the flavour of this other legendary Cannabis strain to another level.
How to Grow Moby Dick
Moby Dick cannabis is known for its incredible size and yield, but to get the best out of this plant, there are a few important aspects to consider during cultivation. Below is a detailed guide to help you maximise its potential in both indoor and outdoor grows.
Best Outdoors, but Adaptable Indoors
Moby Dick truly shines in outdoor grows, where it can reach its full potential thanks to natural ultraviolet light, which helps maximise the plant’s psychoactive effects. Outdoors, Moby Dick can grow up to 3 metres tall, producing astonishing yields. However, it also adapts well to indoor cultivation, provided it gets the space and light it needs.
Space and Light Indoors
When growing indoors, it’s important to give Moby Dick enough space. It’s recommended not to place more than 12 plants per 600W lamp, with each plant in 7-litre pots to avoid limiting its development. Make sure the plant receives as much light as possible to maximise yield.
Watering and Fertilisation in the Growth Phase
During the first two weeks, it’s best not to use fertilisers and water only with water. From the third week, you can start using a growth fertiliser with an EC between 0.9 and 1, along with a root stimulator to promote the plant’s overall health. It’s crucial to maintain the pH at 6.5 throughout this process to ensure proper nutrient absorption.
Flowering Phase and EC Adjustment
When the plants reach 30 to 35 cm, it’s time to switch them to the flowering phase. During this stage, it’s important to gradually adjust the EC each week to maximise flower production:
- 1st week: EC 1.2
- 2nd week: EC 1.4
- 3rd week: EC 1.6
- 4th week: EC 1.6
- 5th week: EC 1.8
- 6th week: EC 1.8
- 7th week: EC 1.6
Moby Dick is prone to iron deficiencies, so keeping the pH at 6.5 during flowering is key to avoiding micronutrient absorption issues.
Watering in Hot Conditions
During hot weather, it’s recommended to alternate between waterings with fertiliser and waterings with just water to avoid over-saturating the substrate. If the temperatures are mild, you can fertilise with each watering, but in this case, it’s essential to use enzymes periodically to ensure proper absorption and prevent salt buildup in the substrate.
End of Flowering
In the last weeks of flowering, it’s crucial to reduce the EC to zero. This means watering only with water and stimulators during the final two weeks to avoid any leftover fertiliser residues in the buds, which would negatively impact the final flavour and aroma of the product.
- 8th week: EC 0 (only water + stimulators)
- 9th week: EC 0 (only water)
Adaptability to Different Climates
Moby Dick is resistant to mould and pests, making it ideal for humid climates. Its short flowering period (between 60 and 70 days) ensures it’s ready for harvest before the heavy rains start. Outdoors, it’s ready for harvest by mid-October in the northern hemisphere.
Size and Yield
When grown in the right conditions, Moby Dick can reach up to 3 metres in height outdoors and produce yields of over 1500 grams per plant. Indoors, it requires plenty of space and light, ideally 800 watts per square metre.
To dispel any doubts about the size and productivity of this white whale, we’ll wrap up this article with a video showing the progress of a Moby Dick grown outdoors in a pot. At the end, you’ll find a table with evaluations of the various aspects of this cannabis strain.

Is Moby Dick suitable for beginners?
Due to its high potency, Moby Dick is more suited to experienced users. While it’s easy to grow, its effects can be too intense for those just starting out.
How long does Moby Dick take to flower?
In indoor grows, Moby Dick typically takes between 60 and 70 days to complete its flowering phase. Outdoors, it’s ready by mid-October.
What is the yield of Moby Dick?
Moby Dick has a high yield. Indoors, it can produce up to 700g/m2, while outdoors, under ideal conditions, it can exceed 1500g per plant.
What special care does this strain require?
Moby Dick requires good height control when grown indoors, so techniques like SCROG or LST are recommended. It’s also essential to adjust the nutrient levels to maximise resin production.
